West Valley Church: From Outdated Church Platform to a Webflow-Powered Digital Home

More Than a Client: A Personal Connection

This project holds a special place in my heart. My husband, my children, and I have been members of West Valley Church for six years. It's our church home, the community that has walked alongside our family, and a place I care deeply about. So when the opportunity came to rebuild their website, it wasn't just a project. It was personal.

During COVID, I had volunteered to help the church update their website while one of the pastors was on sabbatical. That experience gave me a close look at how the site was being used and where it was falling short. When I launched Graceful Web Studio and my pastor found out, he mentioned the church was considering a full website rebuild. That conversation turned into several strategy sessions, and eventually, a partnership to build something the church truly deserved.

The Challenge: A Platform the Church Had Outgrown

West Valley Church had been on Ekklesia 360, a platform built specifically for churches. While it had served its purpose for a time, the site had become difficult to update, hard to maintain, and visually outdated. It didn't reflect the vibrant, welcoming community that West Valley actually is. Beyond the aesthetics, the site had poor accessibility and weak search engine optimization, meaning people searching for a church home in the area were less likely to find it.

Staff members who needed to make updates found the process frustrating and time-consuming. The platform lacked flexibility, and the church had simply outgrown what it could do.

Discovery: Understanding What the Website Needed to Do

Before touching a single design element, I spent time meeting with church leadership and interviewing staff. I needed to understand who was updating the website, what was difficult about the process, and what the site needed to accomplish for the congregation and for first-time visitors.

These conversations shaped every decision that followed. The website wasn't just a digital brochure. It needed to be a living tool that the church could manage week to week with confidence.

The Solution: A Strategic Rebuild on Webflow

We rebuilt the entire site on Webflow, taking full advantage of its powerful CMS, visual design capabilities, and built-in performance. Every section of the site was planned with intention.

Streamlined Sermon Archive

The church had a massive archive of old sermons. Rather than migrate everything, we made the strategic decision to only feature the last four sermon series on the website. This kept the content fresh and relevant without overwhelming visitors or the staff managing it. Older content remained available through their YouTube channel.

A Comprehensive Events System

One of the biggest wins was the events CMS collection. We created a large library of pre-built event entries, most of them saved as drafts. When an event comes up, staff simply go into the CMS, find the event, update the image, date, time, and location, then publish it. When the event ends, they draft it again so it's ready for next time. No rebuilding from scratch every season. They can also schedule posts to go live ahead of time, something they could never do on the old platform.

Live Services and YouTube Integration

Instead of uploading sermon videos directly to the website each week, the church decided to centralize video on their YouTube channel and update the links on the site. We also added a live feature that gets updated weekly, allowing members and visitors to watch the live Sunday service directly from the website.

Plan Your Visit

We strategically built out a Plan Your Visit page designed specifically for people considering attending for the first time. It walks them through what to expect: the service style, what to wear, where to park, children's programs, and how they'll be welcomed. The goal was to remove every barrier between interest and attendance.

Highlighting the People Behind the Ministry

We went deep into each ministry, detailing what they offer and how people can get involved. We highlighted the different ways to serve, and we featured the staff, the leadership team, the pastoral team, and the support staff. The goal was to represent West Valley Church as a whole, not just a building, but the people who make it what it is.

A History Worth Celebrating

One of my favorite parts of this project was the About page. The church dug into their archives and found historical photos from when the church first began. We built a history section that showcases those images alongside the church's story. It was genuinely special to see where they started and how far they've come.

Accessibility Built In From Day One

Accessibility was woven into every step of the build, not treated as an afterthought. We built the site to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA conformance, and we published an accessibility statement that communicates the church's commitment to ensuring their website can be accessed by all people. West Valley was proud to stand behind that commitment, and it reflects who they are as a community.

Bilingual Access with Weglot

We implemented the Weglot language translation app to make the site accessible in Spanish. A bilingual staff member reviewed and corrected the translations, and he now manages the Weglot app alongside weekly website updates. Having someone on the team who understands both the language and the platform has been invaluable for maintaining translation quality.

Training and Handoff

Training was a critical part of this engagement. We spent a few focused hours walking the staff through how to manage events, update sermons, publish content, and use Weglot. The handoff has been seamless. The staff member managing the site has had little to no questions since training, and the website is being updated consistently every week. It's wonderful to stay connected to the site and see how well it's working for the church.

Why This Project Matters

Every project we take on at Graceful Web Studio matters. But this one was truly special. West Valley Church isn't just a client. It's the community my family calls home. As a faith-based organization, this was a project built with love, strategy, and a deep understanding of what this church means to the people it serves.
