Do Accessibility Overlays Work?
No. Accessibility overlays and widgets do not make a website conform to WCAG 2.2 AA, and they can introduce new barriers of their own. An overlay is a script that layers on top of your existing code, so it cannot fix the underlying structure, contrast, or keyboard problems that cause most failures. Real conformance comes from remediating the site itself, not from a widget.
What Is an Accessibility Overlay?
An accessibility overlay is a third-party script or widget that promises instant compliance after you paste one line of code. Most add a floating toolbar with options like font resizing, contrast toggles, and cursor changes, plus automated behind-the-scenes adjustments. The pitch is speed and a low price. The problem is what it cannot reach.
Why Overlays Do Not Deliver Conformance
Overlays fall short because they only touch a small share of WCAG success criteria, and the automated detection behind them is limited. They cannot reliably fix heading structure, keyboard traps, form labeling, or meaningful alt text, which is where most sites actually fail. They can also conflict with the assistive technology a person already uses, and many screen reader users report that overlays make sites harder to use, not easier. They have not reliably prevented accessibility-related legal claims either; overlays are frequently named in them rather than protecting against them.
What to Do Instead
Fix the site at the source. A credentialed audit finds the real barriers, then remediation corrects the structure, contrast, keyboard behavior, and content so the site conforms for everyone, with or without a toolbar.
